How to Become a Contributing Writer for Freelance Online Magazines

A contributing writer is a person who isn’t directly employed with a company, but contributes to its writing sight. For many online publications, this is where a writer’s career begins. Before applying to any sight, it’s best to have a good working knowledge of English grammar and spelling. Study the site you are applying for to learn how they like their articles laid out. Read any admission guidelines that are posted. Keep in mind that guidelines are different for each site.

For example, at Bright Hub, sub-headings are required in the text of an article.  Here’s an example:

The same holds true for writers at Suite 101. Check out these articles by different writers to get a better feel for sub-headings.

Not all sites require sub-headings. Some merely want the text broken into paragraphs. A site like this is Xomba.com. Note the difference in the text of the following article compared to text with sub-headings.

When hoping to become a contributing for an online site, be sure to learn as much as possible about the site before applying, including reading different articles on the site, to learn the site’s writing style and guidelines along with having proper spelling and grammar skills.
